Back again

It seems I am forever posting updates to say “I’m back” after a long hiatus, but hopefully I actually can follow through & be back now that I have a solution in place to access a computer after mine died. I have been reliant on my phone only to access the internet, so this site was cast aside for a time. I also managed to find the little piece of paper that I scribbled my username & password for this page onto as well. I like to write important information on random bits of paper in way that not only would it be confusing for others, but that I can’t even make sense of it.

This past year plus has definitely been busy, even if I haven’t been very present here. I am embracing both my artistic side & the philanthropist within. I have also embraced the idea that saying no to projects that don’t spark joy in me, is ok. Just because I can make something, doesn’t mean I should sell my soul to do so. Making others happy at my own expense isn’t a good thing.

I have yet to workout what I will do with the look of this site, several have asked for me to create an online store, or at least a place where they can view the items that I make, so I may go back to doing something like that. However, if I do, do an online store, I want something with as little overhead as possible, because that just adds stress & I feel my creativity suffers. I also have no interest in churning out hundreds of items for the sake of it, in the hope that someone might buy it & it slowly sucking away my will to live because now I am stuck with all this STUFF. It’s all a balancing act really.

With my site design focusing around the idea of a blog, I like the idea of using some of this space to write about what interests me creatively too, something is separate from my personal page. I’m interested in a wide array of subjects & they all feed into my creative process.

Oh well, back to re-acquainting myself with the layout of the site & getting back into the swing of it. 🙂

Instagram

I freely admit that I don’t use social media in the most effective manner. I also don’t like to spend a lot of time in front of my computer trying to remember passwords (haha), wasting time & most importantly energy that I could be using to actually create something for people. I am still trying to get my etsy shop up & running properly, but as yet, it hasn’t happened.

I did find a way to have some of my posts from Instagram appear on my site & you can look through them by selecting the Instagram link above, or just clicking on the link here. Enjoy 🙂

Been a while

I apologise that it’s been a very long time between posts. I have a great knack of forgetting my passwords, which helps in dragging out when I post to my pages. I have tried writing down passwords, but then I always seem to forget which password goes with which username, in my efforts to to uber secure. I should probably just pretend I didn’t work in the IT field at all, previously & just write out a huge list of all my usernames & passwords & tape them to the wall, for all to see. Not as secure, but way less frustrating than the current system, but I’m a sucker for punishment, so I’ll just continue making things hard for myself, because I can.

Lots of things have happened of late, but it’s been so long I’ll start with something fairly recent.

Last month I was very excited to be interviewed by Anne Walsh, a local artist, as part of her Awesome Artsy Mom’s series. You can check out the interview on Youtube. I talk about some of my passions & what drives me to create the things that I do.

Scrappy Critters

For those that have read the About link, which gives a bit of background about myself, you would have read about how I like to ensure that materials are not wasted.

Here is where I want to introduce you to one of my creations that came about because of my desire not to waste perfectly good materials.

Some scrappy monsters from the summer of 2016
Scrappy Monsters Collection Summer 2016

Scrappy monsters were the result of an experiment. I was looking for a way to use  many of my scraps of fabric (or even reclaimed or gifted pieces of fabric) that were not quite useful for big projects, but didn’t deserve to be shredded for stuffing.

These little guys are created to be imperfectly unique,  a general comment on society. However, with these guys, their differences are celebrated.

Some will have one open eye the other squinty, others will have 2 open eyes. There might be 2 appendages (most commonly just a couple of legs) or there might be 4 or 6. Normally appendages are not even the same size & then there are times you might even find that there are none. It really depends on how I feel at the time. I spend a great deal of time hand picking each scrap, playing around with different pieces, until I find the combination I like.

Since I started making these in 2016, I have made several as custom orders for different people, which has been both an honour & a privilege to do. I’ll do a post about some of those past creations & new ones that I am currently working on, for you to read, soon. These guys are just too cute, not to document.

All filling within each is of new material (polyfill). Whilst some scrappy’s might have similarities to other ones that I have made or might make in future, there are no exact copies & this adds to their charm.

As a quirky bit of information, you may find that some have a zebra print on them. The zebra relates to Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, as I have EDS Hypermobility type. The hearts that adorn some of them, relate to my daughter, who was born with 2 holes in her heart. One has since closed, but we still have regular check-ups about her heart.  So, really, I am no different to any other artist, influenced by things around me. 🙂
